Abstract

ABSTRACT
This study investigated the Role of A.I. Chat GPT in the teaching and learning of vocabulary in the Nigerian classroom. To achieve the purpose of the research, two research objectives and line with the research questions and hypotheses were formulated and tested for the study. A descriptive research design of Survey type was used for the study. The population for this study comprised all the English students in Government secondary schools. While, the population of this research consist of 5468 Students. Out of which three (3) Senior Secondary Schools were Selected in the study area such as Government Girls Secondary School Tudun Wada, Government Girls Secondary School Dangana and Government Girls Secondary School Nassarawa. Nigeria with an estimated population of seven thousand seven hundred& fifty x (7,756) students. The sample size for this study was fifty respondents’ students selected through proportionate sampling procedure. The instrument used for data collection was a researcher developed questionnaire, it was validated and standardized with a reliability index of 0.75r. Out of seven thousand, seven hundred and fifty-six questionnaires’ forms administered fifty were duly completed, returned and used for data analysis. Frequency counts and percentages were used to describe the demographic information of the respondents. In terms of conclusion, the focus of this study is the benefits of using AI in online classrooms to improve students' grasp of course material. With the help of AI, education may reach new heights of excellence. This research was recommended that Teachers should have the Education about the value of Artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the classroom and how it can be used to achieve a wide range of objectives effectively, Ministry of Education both Federal and State Government should plan the Training teachers on how to implement AI-based tools into their Classroom and Students Instruction of learners on the use of AI tools for learning.

Introduction

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
AI is a computer system that simulates human intelligence, thereby machines can “think and act like humans” and can do what originally only humans could do (Zhang and Chen, 2021) in terms of learning, inferring, judging, remembering, understanding human language planning, calculating, thinking, and handling complex problems. AI refers to a broad field of science encompassing computer science, psychology, philosophy, linguistics, mathematics, and others. It becomes evident that there are many points of view on AI, and many definitions exist (Gao, 2021). Dictionary definitions focus on AI “is a sub-field of computer science and how machines can imitate human intelligence: a branch of computer science dealing with the simulation of intelligent behavior in computers; the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior” (as cited in Merriam-Webster). GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), Technology is a type of artificial intelligence language model developed by Open AI. It is designed to generate human-like text by predicting the next word in a sentence based on the context of the preceding words (Reuters, 2023). GPT uses deep neural networks to process large amounts of text data and learn patterns in language, allowing it to generate coherent and grammatically correct sentences. GPT-3, the latest and most advanced version of GPT, contains over 175 billion parameters and has been trained on a vast amount of internet text data, making it one of the most powerful language models currently available (Peritz, 2022).
GPT can be used for a variety of natural language processing tasks, such as language translation, text summarization, and question-answering systems. Chat GPT is a natural language processing tool driven by AI technology that allows you to have human-like conversations and much more with the chatbot. The language model can answer questions and assist you with tasks, such as composing emails, essays, and code. In the fast-paced world of technology, it is rare for a new development to make waves as quickly as ChatGPT has (Muskat, 2023). Chat GPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) system that uses machine learning to generate human-like responses to text prompts. It is a state-of-the-art language model that can understand nd generate text in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, and German. Chat GPT is designed to learn from a large dataset of text, allowing it to generate text that is fluent and coherent (Verma and Diamantidis, 2021). Further, ChatGPT can generate text in various forms, such as essays, jokes and poetry. With continuous input from users, ChatGPT is able to improve its performance in similar tasks (e.g., answering similar questions). To put simply, unlike popular and often romanticized beliefs, ChatGPT does not respond to users’ questions by means of reasoning, nor does it respond with emotions, but it compares existing data to draw the most likely (e.g., the most frequent and relevant) responses.
